Cowanii

The entire plant is stronger and much larger than both others that it is commonly mistaken for. The flower stem is 16-20" tall and clearly triangular in shape. The snow-white floralscape consists of 12 -20 star shaped flowers with sharply contrasting green stamens. Upon emerging, the stem grows and twists between the grassy foliage mostly horizontally until it gradually becomes upright. Often the foliage already appears in the fall and freezes off over the winter; however this is of little concern, except in a nice wet spring where dead foliage is a good starting point for fungi (often seen as rust spots) The bulbs have a hard skin and look somewhat like small, reddish colored marbles.
